... and, 3 Very Surprising Ways They Are Similar...

When you had your last yearly physical, and you were nervously sitting in the waiting room reading about Angelina Jolie's latest foreign aid endeavor, I bet the last thing on your mind was Collision Repair. Surprisingly, the two industries have more in common than you might think. Here are three similarities to keep in mind the next time you find yourself needing repairs for that "mailbox" incident.

Collision Repair vs. The Medical Field…

3.) Auto Insurance Companies and Health Insurance Companies Try to Keep You In-Network

It never fails. You sign up for any insurance, and what do they do? They try to steer you to stay in their network. They cut costs by doctors discounting services for the companies. In return, the insurance companies guarantee prompt payments and incentives to the doctors, and the insurance companies profit from the quantity of specialists that opt into its plans. It's the old "You pat my back, and I'll pat yours" routine.

Now, take the medicine part out, replace it with auto repair terms. A shop would discount its services and parts for the insurance company that brought them business. In return, the insurance company uses the shop because it keeps their costs down a little.

Of course, by law, you do have the right to take your vehicle anywhere of your choosing, but sometimes, insurance companies will not guarantee your vehicle repairs, or guarantee payment of all supplements if you take your vehicle "out of network." Just be sure to research which shop has the best reputation and best repair guarantee, and you'll be fine.

2.) Generic Medications Are Akin to Aftermarket Parts

It's absolutely true. Generic medications are designed for one reason only: to save everyone money (some more than others). You have to look at aftermarket parts for your car the same way. The parts are essentially the generic fenders, bumpers, headlamps, etc. of your vehicle. By practicing this philosophy, the insurance companies save hundreds of dollars, which, in return, saves you money on your premium.

"Can't I insist on OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) replacement parts on my repair," you might ask. Well... This is a grey area, and a question best left to be answered by your insurance company.

1.) Perfect Fixes Are Rare - Return Visits Can Be Normal

Have you ever felt ill and had gone to the doctor to get a prescription for a cold, and it didn't work? Then, you go back and the doctor realizes it was strep throat, but the initial signs didn't appear during your first visit? Usually, no one questions the fact that they might have to go back to the doctor a few times to get healthy. They just want to be healthy, and will do what it takes to get there.

However, in the collision repair industry many customers expect the vehicle to be 100% perfect (like new) when they pick up their vehicles after a repair. This just isn't possible, because 99.99% of the time, the customer's vehicle wasn't in 100% perfect condition before their accident. This is why supplements are a standard practice in the collision repair industry.

A great shop will guarantee your car will be fixed to "pre-accident condition." And, like doctors, it should try to get everything fixed right the first time, but sometimes things just don't show up during the repair process. This is why a great shop will also provide you with a Lifetime Guarantee on all repairs they make.
